In 2011, Kim Jong Il’s final year, Kim spent six months posing as a Christian missionary and an English teacher in Pyongyang, documenting the psychology of the future leaders of North Korea, which resulted in her </em>New York Times <em>bestselling work of literary nonfiction,</em><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Without-You-There-No-Us/dp/0307720659">Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite</a>. <em>Kim has also written for the </em>New York Times, New York Review of Books, Harper’s, <em>and </em>The New Republic, <em>where she is a contributing editor. Eight years later, MacLaughlin continues to pursue both building and writing. Her reviews and essays have appeared in the </em>Boston Globe, Los Angeles Review of Books<em>, </em>The Believer, The Rumpus, The Millions, <em>and </em>Bookslut, <em>among other places, and she has been a guest on </em><a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/03/21/393599207/thanks-to-chance-and-craigslist-a-writer-becomes-a-carpenter">All Things Considered</a><em>. MacLaughlin also writes a blog called </em><a href="http://carpentrix.tumblr.com/">Carpentrix</a>. <em>She lives near the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts.</em></p>

<p><em>Patricia Beard has written nine books of nonfiction, including </em>After the Ball: Gilded Age Secrets, Boardroom Betrayals, and the Party That Ignited the Great Wall Street Scandal of 1905 <em>(Harper Perennial, 2004), </em>Blue Blood and Mutiny: The Fight for the Soul of Morgan Stanley <em>(William Morrow, 2007)</em>, <em>and </em>Growing Up Republican: Christine Whitman: The Politics of Character <em>(HarperCollins, 1996). Most recently, Beard has published a novel, </em><a href="http://books.simonandschuster.com/A-Certain-Summer/Patricia-Beard/9781476710266">A Certain Summer</a> <em>(Simon &amp; Schuster, 2013). Additionally, she has written hundreds of magazine articles and essays as the former features editor of </em>Town &amp; Country, <em>the former editor-at-large of </em>Elle, <em>and the former styles features editor of </em>Mirabella <em>magazine.</em></p>

<p><em>Margo Jefferson has been a staff writer and cultural critic for </em>The New York Times <em>and </em>Newsweek<em>, in addition to having essays and reviews in </em>Harper’s, Vogue, <em>and</em> New York Magazine, <em>among others. Along with a Pulitzer Prize, Jefferson has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation/Theatre Communications Group grant. She is the author of </em><a href="http://www.powells.com/partner/36943/biblio/9780307277657?p_ti">On Michael Jackson</a> (<em>Pantheon, 2006) and </em><a href="http://www.powells.com/partner/36943/biblio/9780307378453?p_ti">Negroland: A Memoir</a> (<em>Pantheon, 2015). Jefferson teaches in the Writing Program at Columbia University.</em></p>
