Taylor Harris is a writer, wife, and mom to three who lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her work has appeared in TIME, O Quarterly, The Washington Post, Longreads, The Cut, Romper, Parents, McSweeney’s, Catapult, and other publications. Her debut memoir, This Boy We Made, was published by Catapult in January 2022.

Neema Avashia was born and raised in southern West Virginia to parents who immigrated to the United States from India. Her essay collection, Another Appalachia, attempts to reconcile her nostalgia for the place she grew up with the troubling realities of unemployment and addiction that confront the state today, while exploring how the lessons she learned in childhood continue to shape her identity in the present.

Avashia has been a history and Civics teacher in the Boston Public Schools since 2003, and often writes opinion pieces and commentary regarding her experiences as an educator. Her essays have appeared in The Bitter Southerner, Catapult, Kenyon Review Online, and elsewhere.

Kyla Schuller is an Associate Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University—New Brunswick, where she investigates the intersections between race, gender, sexuality, and the life sciences in U.S. culture. She was an External Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, and she’s held fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the UC Humanities Research Institute. Her essays appear in in academic journals such as American Literature, American Quarterly, and GLQ as well as popular outlets including Slate, The Rumpus, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Avidly.

This month’s guest Non-Fiction by Non-Men interviewer is Kimi Ceridon. She a freelance writer in Medford, Massachusetts. Her writing has been published in Bon Appetit, Dreamers, HerStry, For Women Who Roar, and Snapdragon. Her new endeavor for 2022 is launching a Grazing Board Business called Life Love Cheese.

Amy Butcher is an award-winning essayist and author of Mothertrucker, a book that interrogates the realities of female fear, abusive relationships, and America’s quiet epidemic of intimate partner violence set against the geography of remote, northern Alaska. Excerpts of Mothertrucker won an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council, and in July 2019, Mothertrucker was optioned by Makeready Films for film development with Primetime Emmy-winning Joey Soloway directing and Academy and Golden Globe-winning actress Julianne Moore in a starring role. Butcher’s first book, Visiting Hours, earned starred reviews and praise from The New York Times Sunday Review of Books, NPR, The Star Tribune, Kirkus Reviews, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and others.

Butcher earned her MFA from the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program and is the 2012-2013 recipient of Colgate University’s Olive B. O’Connor Creative Writing Fellowship in nonfiction, as well as grants and awards from the Vermont Studio Center, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, the Academy of American Poets, the Ohio Arts Council, Word Riot Inc., and the Stanley Foundation for International Research. She is the Director of Creative Writing and an Associate Professor of English at Ohio Wesleyan University and teaches annually at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in Sitka, Alaska.

She lives in Ohio with her three rescue dogs.

Julia Ridley Smith is the author of The Sum of Trifles, a memoir in essays about the process of dispersing her parents’ belongings after their death, with each essay focusing on a different object. Her short stories and essays have appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review, Ecotone, Electric Literature, the New England Review, and The Southern Review, among other publications, and her nonfiction was recognized as notable in The Best American Essays 2019. After earning her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College, she worked for nearly twenty years as a freelance copy editor of academic books. She’s taught creative writing and literature at UNC Greensboro, as well as art-based writing workshops for educators and other adults at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. She is the 2021-22 Kenan Visiting Writer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and lives in her hometown of Greensboro, NC.

This month’s guest Non-Fiction by Non-Men interviewer is Ashley Trebisacci. She currently works as a Study Abroad Advisor at Brandeis University, and her writing has been published by The Journal of College Student Development and Sinister Wisdom. They live outside of Boston with their wife, who just so happens to be Julia’s literary agent.

Pardis Mahdavi is the author of Hyphen, part of Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons series. Mahdavi is currently Dean of Social Sciences and Director of the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University (ASU). Prior to joining ASU, she was the Acting Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. Before coming to Denver, she was at Pomona College from 2006-2017 where she most recently served as professor and chair of anthropology, director of the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College, as well as Dean of Women. Her research interests include academic freedom, diversity and inclusion in higher education, gendered labor, human trafficking, migration, sexuality, human rights, youth culture, transnational feminism and public health in the context of changing global and political structures. She has published five single authored books and one edited volume in addition to numerous journal and news articles. She has been a fellow at the Social Sciences Research Council, the American Council on Learned Societies, Google Ideas, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Bonnie Tsui was born in Queens, New York, and raised on Long Island. She is the author of American Chinatown: A People’s History of Five Neighborhoods, winner of the 2009-2010 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature and a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller and Best of 2009 Notable Bay Area Books selection, and Why We Swim, one of TIME magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2020. Her first children’s book, Sarah and the Big Wave, about big-wave women surfers, was just published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers/Macmillan in May 2021. Tsui lives, swims, and surfs in the Bay Area and is a member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto.

Anna Qu is a Chinese American writer and the author of the memoir Made in China: A Memoir of Love & Labor. She holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Sarah Lawrence College, and her essays about identity and growing up in New York as an immigrant have been published in Threepenny Review, Lumina, Kartika, Kweli, Vol.1 Brooklyn, and Jezebel, among others. Qu is the Nonfiction Editor at Kweli Journal, and she teaches at Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop and Catapult. She lives in Brooklyn with her partner and their cat, Montague (Momo for short).

Aminatta Forna was born in Scotland, raised in Sierra Leone and Great Britain and spent periods of her childhood in Iran, Thailand and Zambia. She is the award-winning author of the novels Happiness, The Hired Man, The Memory of Love and Ancestor Stones, a memoir, The Devil that Danced on the Water, and the essay collection, The Window Seat: Notes from a Life in Motion. Forna’s essays have appeared in Freeman’s, Granta, The Guardian, LitHub, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, The Observer and Vogue. She has written stories for BBC radio and written and presented television documentaries including “The Lost Libraries of Timbuktu” (BBC Television, 2009) and “Girl Rising” (CNN, 2013). Forna is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of the Folio Academy. She has acted as judge for the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Bailey Prize for Women’s Fiction, the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award, the Caine Prize and the International Man Booker Prize. In 2003, Forna established the Rogbonko Project to build a school in a village in Sierra Leone. The charity has also run a number of projects in the spheres of adult education, sanitation and maternal health.
