Linda Hogan is a Chickasaw poet, essayist, and novelist, who has worked as a volunteer in wildlife and raptor rehabilitation. She is the author of The Radiant Lives of Animals, Dwellings: A Spiritual History of the Living World, The Book of Medicines, and Solar Storms, among others. In 1995 she organized a conference for tribal elders on endangered species and was part of a working group for Native input into the reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act. Her lifelong area of interest has been the traditional relationship between indigenous peoples and animals. Hogan is a professor emerita at the University of Colorado, former faculty at the Indian Arts Institute, the writer-in-residence for The Chickasaw Nation, and she was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist for her novel Mean Spirit. She lives in Colorado.

Maddalena Bearzi is the author of Stranded: Finding Nature in Uncertain Times and Dolphin Confidential: Confessions of a Field Biologist, and she is the coauthor of Beautiful Minds: The Parallel Lives of Great Apes and Dolphins. Bearzi is president and cofounder of Ocean Conservation Society. She holds a PhD in biology and a postdoctorate from UCLA, and she has been involved in studying marine mammals, with a conservation bias, since 1990. Her research on dolphins and whales off California represents one of the longest investigations worldwide, and she has published several scientific peer-reviewed papers. Her work and books have been covered by CNN, NPR, KPCC, Al Jazeera America, the Hallmark Channel, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, and American Scientist, among others. Bearzi has also been a writer for numerous media, including National Geographic. Born and raised in Italy, she now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and dog.

Rosanna Xia is the author of California Against the Sea, which examines the future of our vanishing coastline in the face of rising water. She is also an environment reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she specializes in stories about the coast and ocean. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020 for explanatory reporting, and her coverage of a toxic dumpsite in the deep ocean has been featured in the “Best American Science and Nature Writing” anthology. Originally from Massachusetts, Xia now lives in California.

Jaime Green is a freelance writer, editor, and writing teacher who writes about books, culture, and science. Previously, Green was associate editor of Future Tense, a collaboration of Slate, New America, and Arizona State University, the writer behind The New York Times romance book review column, and the creator, host, and producer of the podcast The Catapult. Dr. Karen Fine is a holistic veterinarian who writes about the human-animal bond, holistic veterinary medicine, pet loss, grief, and narrative medicine. She owned and operated her own house-call practice, Fine Veterinary House Calls, for twenty-five years. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir The Other Family Doctor: A Veterinarian Explores What Animals Can Teach Us About Love, Life and Mortality and the veterinary textbook Narrative Medicine in Veterinary Practice: Improving Client Communication, Patient Care, and Veterinary Well-Being. Fine also co-edits Reflections, an online journal on veterinary narrative medicine, and has written for TheNew York Times, the Brevity blog, Bark magazine, and Inside Your Cat’s Mind. She is a graduate of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and Brandeis University, and is certified in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. Fine currently practices small animal medicine in Central Massachusetts, where she lives with her husband and son and an assortment of rescue animals.

Aminatta Forna was born in Scotland, raised in Sierra Leone and Great Britain and spent periods of her childhood in Iran, Thailand and Zambia. She is the award-winning author of the novels Happiness, The Hired Man, The Memory of Love and Ancestor Stones, a memoir, The Devil that Danced on the Water, and the essay collection, The Window Seat: Notes from a Life in Motion. Forna’s essays have appeared in Freeman’s, Granta, The Guardian, LitHub, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, The Observer and Vogue. She has written stories for BBC radio and written and presented television documentaries including “The Lost Libraries of Timbuktu” (BBC Television, 2009) and “Girl Rising” (CNN, 2013). Forna is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of the Folio Academy. She has acted as judge for the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Bailey Prize for Women’s Fiction, the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award, the Caine Prize and the International Man Booker Prize. In 2003, Forna established the Rogbonko Project to build a school in a village in Sierra Leone. The charity has also run a number of projects in the spheres of adult education, sanitation and maternal health.

Koa Beck is the author of White Feminism: From the Suffragettes to Influencers and Who They Leave Behind . Beck is the former editor-in-chief of Jezebel and co-host of “The #MeToo Memos” on WNYC’s The Takeaway. Previously, she was the executive editor of Vogue.com and the senior features editor at MarieClaire.com, and she was a guest editor for the 2019 special Pride section of The New York Times commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Beck’s literary criticism and reporting have appeared in TheAtlantic.com, Out, TIME, TheGuardian.com, Esquire.com, Vogue.com, MarieClaire.com, among others. Her short stories have been published in Slice, Kalyani Magazine, and Apogee Journal. She has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and serves on the board of directors of Nat.Brut, an art and literary magazine, as well as on the advisory board of GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. In 2019, Koa was awarded the Joan Shorenstein Fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School, publishing an academic paper entitled “Self-Optimization in the Face of Patriarchy: How Mainstream Women’s Media Facilitates White Feminism.” She lives in Los Angeles with her wife.

Sarah Mirk is a graphic journalist, editor, teacher, zine-maker, and illustrator whose comics have been featured in The Nib, The New Yorker, Bitch, and NPR. Mirk is currently a contributing editor at The Nib, where she writes and edits nonfiction comics about history, politics, and identity, and also works as a writer onThe Nib’s animation series. She currently also works as a digital engagement producer for Reveal at the Center for Investigative Reporting, where she co-writes the investigative comics series In/Vulnerable, illustrated by Thi Bui. Mirk is the author several books, including Guantanamo Voices, an illustrated oral history of Guantanamo Bay prison, You Do You: Figuring Out Your Body, Dating, and Sexuality, Sex from Scratch: Making Your Own Relationship Rules, the graphic novelOpen Earth, and the self-published collection Year of Zines. She is an adjunct professor in Portland State University’s MFA program in Art and Social Practice, where she teaches a graduate seminar on writing and research.
