There are new reading recs by yours truly up today on The Shepherd! This list is for all you parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles and caregivers who need to have hard conversations with little ones about pets dying. I was inspired to pitch a list of my own after reading my friend Tove Danovich’s list of books about animals that help us understand ourselves better.

If you haven’t checked it out before, The Shepherd is a really cool website to find books to read! Authors recommend lists of their favorite based on different themes, and you can sort bookshelves based on topics such as “dog books” or “books about death.” Check it out!

Being more open about how and from who writers and artists receive support (financial, emotional, otherwise) is something that I care a lot about, and I am thrilled that Fiction Advocate has started the series “How I Got Here” to promote a transparent dialogue about these issues. My essay in the series was one of the hardest, most vulnerable, scary essays I’ve ever written, but I’m glad it’s out there now. Thank you to Fiction Advocate for running the piece, and for Brian Hurley, my editor, for encouraging me to write it and for his kind, thoughtful edits.

I am honored to once again have a piece up on WBUR’s Cognoscenti. (According to my friend Jess Weaver, having two pieces on Cognoscenti makes me a Boston-area celebrity.) Writing memoir is a messy business, and no one knows this better than Helen Fremont ’78.

Fremont’s book The Escape Artist serves as a sequel of sorts to her memoir After Long Silence, published in 1999. After Long Silence grapples with the secret Fremont’s parents kept from her and her sister for most of their lives: that they were Jewish Holocaust survivors. Though Fremont and her sister knew their parents had survived World War II, fleeing their Polish hometown, the daughters were raised Catholic. This false religious identity was one their parents assumed to flee Europe, and, to protect those who helped them, it was an identity they kept up until Fremont and her sister were in their 30s. Upon discovery of the truth, Fremont wrote After Long Silence, revealing the secret her parents had kept for over 50 years. “I’d lived my whole life in my parents’ fiction, governed by lies and secrets and half-truths,” writes Fremont in The Escape Artist, about After Long Silence. “I needed to write something that was my own truth.” Truth exposed; case closed.
